When Prayer fails
"And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers
into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue."
(King James Version)
"Jesus took him away from the crowd to be alone with him.
He put his fingers into the man’s ears,
and after spitting, he touched the man’s tongue.
(GOD'S WORD Translation)
After he took him aside, away from the crowd,
Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears.
Then he spit and touched the man’s tongue.
(New International Version)
I think this is a really fun story!
The illustration is a bit brutal. Who knows what it would look like? In the book the illustration also shows three of Jesus disciples terrified witnessing the incident. The action captured and the expressions on both faces are unbeatable. Another masterpiece from Fredrik Andersson.
As a magician I think it is a splendid method! It wouldn't be magical at all if he just snapped his fingers to cure the man. With this mystic procedure it comes across as Jesus really are doing something significant. Using his saliva is brilliant!
Jesus teaches that you can get whatever you ask for in prayer will be yours. As by pure magic!
(Mark 11:24, Matt 18:19, Joh 14:13, Matt 17:20)
Jesus, supposedly god himself according to the christian theology of trinity. He preaches prayers can cure anything, turns water into wine, he walks on water, travels on the cloud, he got his face to shine like the sun, conjures up food for five thousand men and raises several corpses to life. He is suppose to be able to do anything.
However when he is about to heal a deaf man the exorcist, for some weird reason, had to use a quite strange (read distasteful) method. First he wanted to be alone with the deaf man who could hardly talk. Why did he have to go away from the crowd and be alone with this man? Please don’t start thinking dirty thoughts now. Than using saliva Jesus touched the mans tongue and he also penetrated the man's ears with his fingers!
Afterwards, for another strange reason, Jesus commanded the them not to tell anyone… Why is that? What do we got here? It speaks of body fluid. penetration and touching the tongue of the deaf man. Did anything more happen? Who knows?
Well the bible says the deaf men got healed. Lets hope he didn't get any permanent mental harm.
One may ask what is most plausible here whether an miracle really happened or if it is nothing more than a hearsay.
The rationalist in me does not have to hesitate here. If it really would had happen I find jesus method to be both nutty and unethical.
